REVIEWS:

Hotpress Yearbook 2002
The DIY-revolution in music production has turned self-sufficiency itself into an art form.
The fact that you can have a recording device at home under the stairs tends to take
the sting out of studio costs. Among the benefits is the opportunity to take enough time
to get things right from the start. Jimmy Behan’s debut Ep, is a prime example of the
cottage industry approach to music-making got absolutely right. The music across
all four tracks is mature and long-lasting. With one gesture, a tiny niche has been carved.

The Event Guide | Single of the Issue
If music has the right to children, as Boards of Canada so intriguingly suggested back in
1998, then perhaps this year we are beginning to see their offspring come of age.
Following sublime albums by Four Tet, Susuma Yakota, Manitoba and others of a similar
ilk, comes this exquisite EP, music of the wistful moment in four distinct parts. Acoustic
guitars, oscillating keyboards, synthesized swirls, tippety-tap hi hat patterns and the
occasional beat of the kick drum combine for an experience as much mood as music.
A clarion call for the merging of folk and electronica that seems to be taking place
organically around our ears and an entirely pleasurable listening experience.

Dubfly
First release from Dublin label sees Dublin based producer Jimmy Behan make his mark with this excellent four track Ep. The A- side opens with Hatton Cross, a slow acoustic guitar led atmospheric downtempo groove. California New Edge is just as slow in terms of beats, but is heavier in terms of atmosphere. The B-side is darker with the predominantly piano-led, dark Gate 28. Almost cinematic, this is the strongest track for me, quiet, slow, but very strong. The slow break of Red On Chrome finishes this e.p well, to make this essential buying.
